This is for all Murray bicycles sold through Sears & roebuck's stores!
Most commonly known as Sears Sportsters & Spyders. these bikes were made by several different bicycle makers. the one's we will discuss here are the Murray built Sportsters & Spyders!
1964 was the first year the new Murray Sportster bikes showed up in the christmas catalog! This new Sportster was dipped in chrome with Red & white trim, and was the must have bike for kids in 64

In 1966 the Bike was now called the Spyder and featured a 3 speed stick shift! And flaming red & White seat!

Also avilable in 1966 was a 24" spyder in Black with White trim I have also seen these bikes in Violet

junior version in chrome with pneumatic tires and spring seat!

In 1967 a 5 speed Spyder was added to the line up. This one was painted in Flamboyant Gold with a Tiger striped seat!

This is probably the most known spyder, the Sears Screamer! Made by Murray but sold exclusivly through Sears stores from Nov of 1968 through 1972 below you will see the differences between years.
This is the first Screamer released in or about November of 68 This one uses the same frame design as the Murray badged f series Eliminators. but had a different chain guard and duel brakes on the rear wheel. they came in a magenta coaster model, and a Flamboyant Yellow 5 speed model.

Another unique feature were the Butterfly handle bars. these mimicked the steering wheel on the draster cars of the time!

In 1969 Sears wanted a all new design for the Screamer bikes, So they went to Murray, and Murray's Lead designer came up with this all new Screamer. the new frame was raised in the rear, and dropped in the front by using a 16" fork to give it a forward motion look!.

Also new was a all new shifter! This one sported a new Drag brake lever along with a new console look in chrome & wood grain.

Also new was a injection molded seat with build in rear side and back reflectors a new billboard chain guard and two tone flamboyent yellow to red paint.. this new screamer was a big hit and Sears kept this design untill 1972 when the Screamer was dropped from production.

Sears also expanded the screamer line to include a new Mag wheel coaster Screamer and a 3 speed model.
The mag wheel screamer sported a cast aluminum rear wheel, and a drag brake. with a lemon lime to green two tone paint color.

the 3 speed version was a thrifty model that sported a 3 speed wheel with a reverse paint color of the 5 speed screamer but had no front torrsion springer fork, or butterfly handel bars, and no drag brake on the shifter.

The 5 speed Screamer continued untill 1972 with little changes, in mid 1970 they changed to an upolstered seat instead of the injection molded seat, and used seveal styles of pedals including reflector pedals that went into effect in 1971 due to theBMA.

in 1971 Huffy bicycle built a coaster brake screamer for sears that looked some what the same but sported thier flaming stack chain guard and shorter frame. and a two tone lemon lime paint color, these were called sreamer gremlins.
